what needs to be done right now in your business?

pedestrian crossing light

“The Zen-inspired painter seeks the ‘truth’ of a landscape, like that of religion, in sudden enlightenment. This allows no time for careful detailed draftsmanship. After long contemplation, he is expected to be able to seize inner truth in a swordlike stroke of the brush….”

Working as hard as you do it’s easy to become so focused on what you’re doing that you forget why you’re doing it.

Peter Drucker, often considered The Father of Management, formulated many concepts about business that we now take for granted.

In this particular case I’m refering to what he called “the activity trap,” and Drucker proposed “management by objective” as a way to avoid it.

So how do you maintain focus on your objective, the “what” rather than the “how,” and thereby keep innovation alive?

Are you confident that you really do know what needs to be done right now, for your investment of time, effort and money to not become insignificant?

Before jumping into my own day of “hurry hurry, rush rush” I began by taking a bit of time to Think.

That thinking motivated my sharing this post with you.

If this post has caused you to take a pause and Think, my time sharing this with you has been well spent.

Personally, what I’ve come up with about my own business, involving you now reading it :-) is this:

“My job is to get both of our “wheels of thought” rolling by asking questions.”

“Your job in our masterminding the sharing of thought is to provide answers.”

For both of us this begins a journey of self-exploration, Peter Drucker would suggest,

“A journey of Self-Exploration with Five Essential Questions:”

1. What is your mission?

2  Who is your customer?

3. What does your customer value?

4.  What are your results?

5.  What is your plan?

Organized Planning, Step 6, will be the next step detailed in our sharing with you each of the Be All You Can Be 13 steps to Freedom.

Part of today’s research toward its writing had me read the following introduction to Peter Drucker.  Who’s influence upon modern day business is now legendary.

It gifted me with some powerful thinking time.

As part of your own innovative thinking today give it a read, and take some notes of what about it inspires you.

I look forward to you sharing your comments to this post.

What are your results, having inspired each other by sharing our thoughts today, and taking these first steps of masterminding together?

A quick “brush stroke” of it’s Z:

Zen: In 1998, when the writer Harriet Rubin interviewed Drucker at his home for Inc., he showed her this passage from a book on Japanese art: “The Zen-inspired painter seeks the ‘truth’ of a landscape, like that of religion, in sudden enlightenment. This allows no time for careful detailed draftsmanship. After long contemplation, he is expected to be able to seize inner truth in a swordlike stroke of the brush….” Similarly, Drucker achieved enlightenment through quiet observation, waiting patiently until he saw an idea whole, then rendering universal truth in the swift space of a sentence. Thus was the essence of the master.”

Are you wandering in the world, uncertain, lonely and in constant fear?

A Course in Miracles

We all are living lives of Quiet Desperation says Thoreau, where we “Seek But Do Not Find.”

Simply doing busy-ness all week can wear me thin sometimes. So this weekend became a time of reading and thinking, pondering and even a bit of praying for understanding on a deeper level, a level that might restore Peace.

Seeking helped me to find the following excerpts which miraculously restored my Peace, possibly it will assist you to re-member your own.

“A Course in Miracles” is the primary reference for this mindset, though I’d recommend starting with

The Disappearance of the Universe: Straight Talk About Illusions, Past Lives, Religion, Sex, Politics, and the Miracles of Forgiveness

for a beginning introduction.  Most of what I share here can be read in it’s full context in “The Lighthouse,” a newsletter of the Foundation for a Course in Miracles Volume 20 Number 4 December 2009 issue by Kenneth Wapnick, Ph.D.  His masterful insights into A Course in Miracles was the inspiration for sharing this post with you.)

“…everyone who is born to dwell in this ‘dry and dusty world, where starved and thirsty creatures come to die’ (has) …chosen to believe the ego’s lies of separation over the Holy Spirits’s truth of Atonement, and (is thereby) still choosing to place faith in a pathological liar (the ego) who can never be trusted.”

A Course in Miracles suggests that our lives are quietly desperate because we shall never find the love and innocence for which we yearn, since we are looking in the wrong place.

An ego’s journey which leads to the hellish existence of sin, betrayal and death.  Taking the tiny mad idea of separation seriously – ie. calling it sinful.

What but the defenses of repression and projection can enable us to maintain our existence while still believing in the ego’s unchallenged reality of guilt and punishment?

The decision making mind that chooses guilt is the source of all the problems we experience as bodies.  Indeed, concealing our mind’s choice for the ego’s guilt is the purpose of the world.

…it was only our decision to be separate from love that has caused our distress.

The bodily dreamworld of guilt has come to occupy our attention so that the mind’s dreamworld of guilt is obscured, an obscurity that prevents our ever awakening from the dream to the loving innocence we left only in our delusional state of thinking.

And so the mind’s guilt over the nonexistent sin of destroying innocence remains concealed and protected by a world that is ignorant of what is driving its very existence.

As long as you believe that guilt is real.  This is the crux of the problem, as well as the solution…the issue is not the guilt itself, nor the world of guilt that arose from it, but only our belief in them.  This understanding is imperative if we are to return attention to our minds so that we may hear a different Voice.

A voice that helps us to make the correction from sin to mistake, from guilt to innocence, is the basis of forgiveness, the thrust of A Course in Miracles.

All distress is unforgiveness.

What worldly experience can ever come close to the joyous comfort that Jesus brings us through forgiveness?

It is nothing less than the peace of God that comes when we know not only that we are a mind, but a guiltless mind that is free from the illusions of an insane thought system, and therefore identified with the thought of truth.

All pain is resistance, our fear of the truth of our identity as God’s one Son.

What do you think is the biggest mistake that leaders make?

PICT8288 Photo of Tim and our son “Neo.”

Sam Deep’s recent blog post enlightened me with his insightful understanding of what I would call true-leadership (highlights and link to read the full article can be found at the bottom of this post).

It opened my eyes to a recent experience I had in the birthing room of a hospital when my wife gave birth to our son “Neo.”

What do you think is the biggest mistake that leaders make?

I look forward to you sharing your personal experience of being a leader and/or follower with your replies and comments.

Here is what I shared in response to Sam’s article:

“Deep and Insightful post Sam thank you.

It may not be a 12th major leadership mistake being similar to “5. Relating to people as objects,” but a distinction I’d like to add in any case.

Making the leadership mistake of…

“Being a Power over others, in place of a power to them”

…Though, I learned profoundly in a hospital birthing room just days ago it’s a mistake that can be made both ways!

As an American now living with my viking-wife on the fjord here in Norway and having just become parents to our son “Neo” provides the setting of my story.  At almost 44 years old it certainly is not my first experience with “power over vs. power to” but 5am in a birthing room with my wife and professionals wielding very large needles certainly required me to draw upon all my past experiences with leadership.

Placing the epidural needle into my wife’s spine was not going well as she looked to me at a time when I felt powerless to lead anything but my own hand which must have stroked her head hundreds if not thousands of times by then.  She was laying on her side and in ever increasing pain pleading with me to help her understand what the anesthesiologist was doing to her back!

Zero communication from the professionals in the room left me to guessing why the procedure had not been completed yet.  After what seemed at least 4 attempts to place the needle into my wife’s spinal fluid failed…my being in the role of being a power to the anesthesiologist flipped when FINALLY she communicated to us that she’d like to “try” the procedure again.

Silly what comes to mind at certain times in our life, all I could think of then was Master Yoda in Star Wars saying to Luke Skywalker “…no try, do or don’t do…”

Applying my vocabulary, understanding and compassion to the situation required that I then and there become the leader of it.

Was I mistaken in my own personal leadership allowing someone to stick large needles into my wife’s back while attempting to lead us as “objects?”

It took me a while to realize it…but ultimately my answer was a resounding “Yes” when I stood up to a professional who had violated our trust.

Is it possible that being a power “over” ourselves is the prerequisite to extending power “to” another?”

What are your thoughts?

I’m looking forward to you sharing your story of leadership experience.

(Sam’s list of the 11 Biggest Mistakes the leaders make is:

  1. Succumbing to fear.
  2. Failing to hold people accountable.
  3. Refusing to learn.
  4. Not seeing themselves as others do.
  5. Relating to people as objects.
  6. Not delegating enough.
  7. Burying their heads in the sand.
  8. Valuing “what” over “how.”
  9. Acting unethically.
  10. Leading in a spoke network.
  11. Being a failure-preventer rather than a success-insurer.

Step 5 “Imagination,” Do You Believe In Ghosts?

CIMG0613 PICT5359

Do You Believe in Ghosts, or what some people would call “Orbs?”

One of these curious “balls of light” showed up in a photograph of me not long ago and really peaked my imagination.

We all love a good mystery don’t we?  :-)

( It’s a bit off topic but do let me know what you think these orbs might be in your comments below, and if you have any “Orb” or ghost photos of your own share those too!  My latest thinking is that “ghosts” are a phenomenon of “uncontrolled imagination.”  What do you think? )

Ok, back to the task at hand of understanding this

5th of 13 steps to Be All You Can Be, Imagination.

Remember we began with Step 1 DESIRE which can be transmuted into MONEY when you have MASTERED, ASSIMILATED and BEGUN TO MAKE USE of all 13 success principles being explained and tied together.

So I’ve been doing some deep thinking about things lately, especially how powerful our imagination really is.

Albert Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.”

Walt Disney was reported to have said about Disney World just before he died, ”If I had not seen it you would never be able to experience it.”

Napoleon Hill in Think and Grow Rich calls Imagination…

“The Workshop of the Mind” and considers it the fifth step to Riches.

He also said that the impulse, the DESIRE (let’s also add the word IDEA), is given shape, form and ACTION through the aid of the imaginative faculty of the mind.

Napoleon also believed our own brains are both a broadcasting and a receiving station for the “VIBRATION OF THOUGHT.”

“Our only limitation lies in our development and use of our imagination,” he said.

In his opinion there are Two Forms of Imagination:

1.  Synthetic Imagination – being the arranging old concepts, ideas, or plans into new combinations.  Where nothing “New” is created.  It is synthetic imagination that is used most by the inventor, with the exception of the Genius, who draws upon the next form of imagination when unable to solve a problem through simple rearranging of the known.

2.  Creative Imagination – is really interesting!  This is the realm of “hunches” and “inspirations” where the finite human mind has direct communication with Infinite Intelligence.  It’s here where basic and new ideas are handed over to us.  It is through this faculty of the mind that “thought vibrations” or “influences” from the minds of others are received.  It is through this application of imagination that one individual may “tune in” or communicate with the subconscious minds of others ( see step 3 Autosuggestion here ), is that cool or what! :-)

You may remember from Step 4 Specialized Knowledge that Imagination is the catalyst that unites a good idea with the specialized knowledge required to translate it into SUCCESS.

You can put IMAGINATION “to work” for instance building a Plan or Plans to transform DESIRE/IDEAS into money.

When you reduce a PLAN to WRITING you will have definitely given concrete FORM to your initially intangible DESIRE/IDEAS.

This begins the process of converting THOUGHT into its physical counterpart because DESIRE/IDEAS are thought impulse!

Truly thoughts and IDEAS are things, and their scope of operations is the world itself.

IDEAS CAN BE TRANSMUTED INTO CASH THROUGH THE POWER OF DEFINITE PURPOSE, PLUS DEFINITE PLANS.

Are you someone who believes that riches will come by way of hard work and honesty alone?

Riches, when they come in Huge quantities, are never the result of HARD work!  Riches come, if they come at all, in response to definite demands, based upon the application of definite principles, and not by chance or luck.

Generally speaking, an IDEA is an impulse of thought that impels action by an appeal to the imagination.  All master sales people know that IDEAS can be sold where merchandise cannot.  Ordinary salespeople don’t know this – that’s why they are ordinary.

For instance, many people buy titles (IDEAS) and not contents of books.  It’s has happened more than once that a publisher (and even an internet marketer :-) ) has merely changed the name of a book that was not moving, and sales suddenly jumped upwards of millions of copies being sold.  The inside of the book was not changed in any way.  The “old” cover that wasn’t selling was replaced with a new one with “box office” value.

As simple as this example may seem, it was an IDEA!

IMAGINATION at work.

There is no standard price on IDEAS. Creators of ideas make their own price and, if they are smart, get it.

The movie industry is another great example of this.  It has created many millionaires, many of which couldn’t create ideas – BUT – they had the Imagination to recognize ideas when they saw them.

The Success of Andrew Carnegie, thought to be the worlds first billionaire, came because he surrounded himself with people who created ideas and people who put ideas into operation.  Doing so made himself and others fabulously rich.

IDEAS are intangible forces, but they have more power than the physical brains that give birth to them.

Initially you give life and action and guidance to ideas, then they take on power of their own and such a power that is able to sweep aside all opposition.

Consider the power of Christianity, which began with a simple idea.

“Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.”

This Christ IDEA and many others in the realm of FAITH go marching on!

What is a deepest DESIRE that You have which You would like to be continued long after Your limited form of a body return its Content back to its Source?

You’ll give birth to Your intangible DESIRE giving it concrete Form when you leave your comments to this post.

I look forward to our ongoing conversation there!

And, I sure appreciate you reading such a long and deep thinking post. :-)

Peace, God is.
